On August 5, 2026, a Family Court sitting at the Magistrate Court in Aba, Abia State, convicted and sentenced Chidiebere Kalu, a 30-year-old security officer attached to Radiant Glory Academy in Umuichichi, Aba, to one year in prison for sexually abusing a 10-year-old female pupil within the school premises.
Chidiebere Kalu was a security officer employed at Radiant Glory Academy, Umuichichi, Aba — a position that placed him in direct, daily contact with the school’s pupils and afforded him access to the child he abused.
The court found him guilty on two counts of indecent assault and instilling fear in a minor, with both sentences ordered to run concurrently.
The court sentenced Kalu to one year imprisonment without the option of a fine on the first count, and one year imprisonment with an option of a ₦200,000 fine on the second count, with both sentences ordered to run concurrently.
The case was initiated following a complaint filed by the victim’s family regarding incidents that occurred on the school premises, after which the matter was investigated and prosecuted through the criminal justice system.
The Vivacious Development Initiative, in collaboration with the Child Protection Network, Abia State Chapter, provided child protection support for the survivor, monitored the police investigation, and followed the case through prosecution until judgment was delivered.
The Executive Director of VIDI and Abia State Coordinator of the Child Protection Network, Ambassador Onyinyechi Joy Nwosu, stated,
“This judgement sends a clear message that child abuse has no place in our schools or communities and that perpetrators of offences against children can be held accountable through the justice system.”
She added that the conviction reinforced the principle that every child has the right to safety, dignity, and protection, while underscoring the need to strengthen child protection laws and enforcement mechanisms.
Kalu’s conviction is the latest in a series of child sexual abuse convictions secured in Abia State in recent months. This is not the first time NFM has reported on school staff abusing children in their care.
NFM previously reported that Emmanuel Buchi, a security guard at Greensprings School in Lagos, was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a 37-year-old nurse in the school clinic, and that a Lagos court sentenced teacher John Osifo to life imprisonment for raping a pupil under his care.
