In commemoration of the International Safe Abortion Day, Naija Feminists Media (NFM), Nigeria’s leading media organisation dedicated to feminist journalism, is set to host an X Space on the topic: “Who Pays the Price When Abortion is Unsafe?” The event will be held on Monday, September 28, 2026.
International Safe Abortion Day is an action global day observed annually on September 28 to advocate for bodily autonomy, universal access to safe, legal, and affordable abortion care. This year’s theme, Solidarity in Action: Advance Reproductive Justice and Urgently Strengthen Health Systems for Comprehensive Abortion Care (CAC), focuses on global actions that will mobilise significant changes in reproductive healthcare. The 2026 global day is coordinated by the Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights (WGNRR), with target campaigns centred on combating misinformation and stigma, decriminalisation and policy reform, demand for robust health infrastructure, and intersectional solidarity.
For this year’s conversation, NFM’s X space will examine the dire consequences of restricting access to safe reproductive care and highlight how it contributes to maternal mortality. Discussants include seasoned professionals and advocates: Omotuemen Favour, founder of Save the Girl Child Initiative; Oluwatoyin Magbagbeola, founder of Femirivied; Sheriff Awudu; Knowledge Manager, IBP Network, Daina Mushiyi; Human Rights Defender and Inclusion Champion, Wakesho Langali; and a Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Advocate.
They will provide insight into what meaningful access to safe abortion care should look like in Nigeria, the role of healthcare providers and policymakers, and why decriminalisation and comprehensive reproductive healthcare are important parts of the conversation. The conversation will begin at 5 pm WAT on NaijaRadFems.
