Nollywood actress and former Big Brother Naija star Bisola Aiyeola has said that while she views marriage as an important societal institution, it is not a priority or the centre of her life.
Speaking on the In My Opinion podcast alongside actor Uzor Arukwe, Bisola explained that she is content with her current circumstances. “Marriage is an institution, is essential for the society. For me, if marriage does come, I will get married, but it is not the core of my existence. I mean, I’m doing pretty good,” she stated. “I turned 40 in January. Yeah. I love me so much, and this is the best times of my life.”
Bisola highlighted the unequal responsibilities many women face in relationships. She questioned the value of remaining in a marriage where women often handle the majority of the workload, including acting as breadwinners while also managing childbirth, childcare, and household duties, only for partners to expect to be served.
“Women are like, you know what? What’s the point if I still have to do everything myself? Why do I have to be tied to this man all in the name of marriage?” she said.
As a single mother to a 17-year-old daughter, Bisola also addressed the realities of raising a child alone. She said she makes a point of telling her daughter that single parenthood is not something to aspire to.
“Being a single parent and looking after my daughter, I still let her know that being a single parent is not that easy. That’s not what you should aspire to be. Bearing the whole load of raising a child shouldn’t be for one person alone,” she explained.
