Naija Feminists Media (NFM) has trained women human rights defenders (WHRDs) on digital safety and social media security, equipping participants with practical skills to protect themselves and their organisations online and engage more safely in digital activism.
The cascading training was supported by Pollicy, a feminist collective of technologists and creatives working at the intersection of data, design and technology to improve lives. The training facilitated by NFM’s founder took place on Friday, October 16, 2026, in Ogba, Lagos. Participants included 16 WHRDs, including women with disabilities, drawn from NFM’s community and networks, as well as journalists, leaders of women’s rights organisations, and support groups.

Participants received training on social media security, secure browsing, internet censorship circumvention, computer hygiene and data encryption. The sessions focused on helping feminists recognise digital risks and adopt safer online practices in their personal activities, advocacy work and organisational engagements.

NFM assessed participants’ learning through interactive, gamified group activities in which attendees highlighted key lessons from the training. Participants reported improved knowledge of digital safety and social media security, as well as greater confidence in engaging in online activism. They also said they intended to apply the skills they learned to their advocacy work and within their organisations.

For several participants, the training was their first formal introduction to digital safety and social media security. They described the sessions as helpful in strengthening their understanding of how to safeguard themselves online.

The training was part of NFM’s efforts to strengthen the digital safety knowledge and capacity of women human rights defenders, particularly feminists who use online platforms to advance advocacy and promote social change.

By providing practical guidance on digital security, the convening sought to help feminists build safer online practices and protect themselves and their organisations while participating in digital spaces.
