Summary
The death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu has sparked outrage over rising insecurity in Abuja, with residents recounting harrowing attacks despite police presence nearby.
The tragic death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a 29-year-old feminist, has sparked a public outcry over the state of insecurity in Nigeria’s capital.
In a post shared on X on September 29, 2025, Uloma, a Nigerian feminist, recounted her sister’s near-death experience in Abuja just two weeks earlier.
According to her, her sister was robbed and stabbed near the Abuja City Gate while on her way to the National Youth Service Corps’ Community Development Service (CDS).
“They could’ve just robbed her, but no, they had to stab her for the plot. We still don’t understand it. And there were policemen stationed less than 50 metres away from where it happened,” Uloma wrote.
She added that her sister was more shocked by the nonchalant response of the policemen when she screamed and ran to them for help than by the fact that she had just been robbed and stabbed.
Another X user, @I_Am_Ilemona, shared a similar account of violence. He revealed that his cousin was attacked in broad daylight around Aco Estate on Airport Road.
“They swung a sharp machete at her head and she only survived because she raised her hand. The machete cut clean through her fingers, such that only skin held it from completely falling off. They cut her like four times,” he wrote.
According to him, the attackers calmly stole her phone and laptop bag after severely wounding her, all less than 300 metres from a police station.
The testimonies have fueled widespread anger, with many Nigerians lamenting the frequency of armed robberies, stabbings, and kidnappings across the capital.
