ADC Clears Senator Ireti Kingibe of Suspension Rumours

Summary: The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed reports claiming that Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory, was suspended from the party, stating that the rumour is false and not recognised by its national leadership.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed reports claiming that Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has been suspended from the party.

Rumours of her suspension began circulating after the Wuse Ward chapter of the party in Abuja reportedly announced an indefinite suspension over alleged anti-party activities, insubordination, and violation of party rules.

The ward chairperson, Kanayo Chukwu, was reported to have made the announcement during a stakeholders’ meeting attended by party executives and members, stating that the decision followed deliberations by ward members. According to him, the suspension followed a general ward meeting held on March 10, 2026, where members deliberated on several allegations against the senator.

Kanayo said the meeting, which reportedly had over 2,000 participants, considered accusations including the confiscation of the ward register, the alleged operation of a parallel membership registration process, persistent absence from ward meetings, failure to pay statutory party dues, and actions considered insubordinate to party leadership.

However, the national leadership of the ADC has clarified that no such suspension has been approved.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said it was unaware of any suspension of the senator and urged the public and media to disregard the reports.

“The African Democratic Congress is unaware of any suspension of Senator Ireti Kingibe, the distinguished senator representing the Federal Capital Territory,” Abdullahi said.

He added that the party has established constitutional procedures for handling allegations against its members and that such matters are addressed through internal party mechanisms rather than public announcements.

“We therefore urge the public and the media to disregard the reports suggesting that Senator Ireti Kingibe has been suspended by the party, as they are false and misleading,” the statement added.

Senator Ireti Kingibe joined the ADC on December 18, 2025, months after announcing her resignation from the Labour Party (LP), the platform on which she was elected during the 2023 general election.

The development comes amid growing conversations about the treatment and participation of women in Nigerian politics. Recently, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan was removed from the Nigerian Senate delegation to the 70th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) in New York and replaced by a male senator, Adeniyi Adegbonmire, despite the conference’s focus on women’s rights.
