Summary

Former Minister Oby Ezekwesili has called on Nigeria's National Assembly to address systemic challenges facing women in leadership positions following a dispute between Senator Natasha Akpoti and Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Former Minister Oby Ezekwesili, founder of FixPolitics, has called on the Nigerian National Assembly (NASS) to address the systemic challenges faced by women in both public and private leadership spaces. In a tweet on February 28th, Ezekwesili criticized the assembly for focusing on “minors” while the world grapples with significant global shifts.

She accused the “political rascals” of exploiting public resources without consequence, intensifying the nation’s hardships. Ezekwesili specifically referenced the ongoing dispute between Senator Natasha Akpoti and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, demanding transparency and full disclosure from the Senate.

“At this stage, on this unfortunate degenerating saga between Senators Natasha Akpoti and the President of the @NGRSenate, Senator Akpabio, the Nigerian public deserves transparency and full disclosure,” she stated.

Ezekwesili urged the NASS to leverage the current situation to conduct public hearings and independent investigations, thereby addressing the broader structural issues that women encounter in Nigerian society. “We must now seize the opportunity of the saga @nassnigeria for Nigerians to collectively know and address all systemic and structural issues that women face in public and private spaces of leadership and generally in our society,” she said.

She concluded by asserting that “transparency is the best antidote to information asymmetry,” and that Nigerians have a right to know the full details of the situation within the Senate.

“This is a Demand,” she declared.
