Summary
Hundreds of African girls and young women have gathered in Nairobi for the 5th African Girls and Young Women Festival. The event, organised by FEMNET in partnership with Plan International, ECPAT International, and others, aims to amplify demands for justice and the decolonisation of African identities.
The 5th African Girls and Young Women Festival officially kicked off in Nairobi, bringing together powerful voices from across the continent to demand justice, equity, and liberation for girls and young women.
The event was organised by FEMNET (The African Women’s Development and Communication Network) in partnership with Plan International, ECPAT International, and other feminist organisations. The festival is a continental convening designed to amplify the voices of African girls and young women.
This year’s theme, “Deconstructing Colonisation and Advancing Reparations for African Girls and Young Women”
“We are here to dismantle centuries of colonial propaganda that has insidiously stripped away our rich cultures, distorted our histories, and undermined our very identities. No more! Today, we reclaim our narratives, celebrate our heritage, and stand tall in the truth of who we are. Our culture is our power, and we’re taking it back, piece by beautiful piece,” said Rachel Kagoiya, a feminist activist and one of the speakers at the event.
There will be workshops, storytelling circles, and strategy sessions and also focus on centring African knowledge systems, demanding reparations, resisting exploitation, and reclaiming African heritage from the margins of colonial narratives.
As FEMNET stated in a tweet, “We’re actively deconstructing colonisation and fearlessly advancing reparations because the future of African girls and young women demands justice, equity, and liberation.”
