Summary

Baobab for Women’s Human Rights has condemned the suspension of Captain Oluranti Ogoyi by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). The organisation is demanding impartial justice for the pilot following an incident with musician Wasiu Ayinde, who attempted to prevent the plane from taking off.

The Baobab for Women’s Human Rights has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to provide justice for Captain Oluranti Ogoyi of ValueJet in the incident involving Wasiu Ayinde, in which he tried to prevent a plane from taking off by standing in front of it.

In a press statement released on August 11, titled “Disrespect in the Skies: When Entitlement Takes Flight and Justice Stays Grounded,” the organisation expressed concern over the incident between Wasiu Ayinde and pilot Oluranti Ogoyi. They view it as a disturbing case study of gendered power dynamics and a glaring lack of accountability.

The Baobab for Women’s Human Rights stated that suspending Captain Oluranti Ogoyi by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) before all the facts were known highlights women’s professional challenges. They stated that such incidents expose the patriarchal entitlement women face daily, especially in male-dominated professions like aviation.

“The fact that the captain in this scenario was a woman is not incidental. In a society where women continue to fight for their rightful place in professional spheres, particularly in male-dominated industries like aviation, this incident reeks of the same patriarchal entitlement that women face daily,” the statement reads.

They called on authorities to investigate the incident, make their findings public, and ensure that Wasiu Ayinde faces the full consequences of his actions under the law.

“Recognise and address the gender dimensions of this incident. This is not just about unruly passenger behaviour but about the systemic disrespect women professionals often face.” The statement reads in part, “Reassess the suspension of the pilots. While protocols must be followed, the focus should remain on addressing the root cause of the incident: the alleged behaviour of the passenger.”

The Baobab for Women’s Human Rights organisation said the incident should serve as a wake-up call, urging people to stand in solidarity with Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and all other female professionals who experience disrespect and undermining simply because of their gender.
