Nigeria’s Federal Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, has supported President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s statement that Nigeria is governed by a democracy that guarantees religious liberty, amid the threat of a military takeover in Nigeria.

On November 1, 2025, United States President Donald Trump, in a post, claimed that Christians are being prosecuted at an alarming rate in the country.

“Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed; something must be done,” Trump posted on Nov 1 on the Truth social platform. “I’m hereby making Nigeria a country of particular concern.”

He further designated the US Congress, including Congressperson Riley Moore and House Appropriations Committee Chair Tom Cole,  to investigate the situation and prepare for possible intervention in the country.

Following his remark, Nigeria’s President Tinubu rejected claims of religious divide in the country. However, he shared that his administration has maintained active engagement with all faiths since 2023.

“The characterisation of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect our national reality, nor does it take into consideration the consistent and sincere efforts of the government to safeguard freedom of religion and beliefs for all Nigerians.”

He added, “Our administration is committed to working with the United States government and international community to deepen understanding and cooperation on the protection of communities of all faiths.”

In agreement with the President’s stance, Bianca shared the federal government statement on X page on November 3rd, 2025.
