An unidentified Borno woman has retrieved her gold worth ₦23.6 million, buried in Mallamfatori, Abadam local government area, Borno state, 15 years ago, after escaping from a Boko Haram attack. This retrieval was facilitated by the Divisional Police Officer of Mallam Fatori and his team.

The Boko Haram insurgency is a long-standing security issue in Nigeria. It began in 2009 and has created one of the world’s most severe human rights violations and humanitarian crises. Their attacks are particularly common in the northern part of the country. Their tactic includes abduction of women, girls, and children; mass killing of people, destruction of properties and houses.

The woman who previously resided in the Mallam Fatori area of Borno State is among the many victims who fled during the Boko Haram attack, leaving their properties and communities behind. After she returned to the community, she sought police assistance to retrieve the items she had buried in the sand while escaping the insurgency.

In a statement issued on Monday, December 1, 2025, the Public Relations Officer of the command, ASP Nahum Daso, commended the Divisional Police Officer of Mallam Fatori and his team for their exemplary professionalism and integrity.

The statement reads, “The woman, who fled Mallamfatori during a Boko Haram attack 15 years ago, recently returned and sought police assistance to retrieve items she had buried in the sand while escaping the incident. Through diligent and coordinated efforts, the officers successfully recovered 22 cc of gold valued at approximately ₦20 million, as well as a gold bracelet with a chain worth ₦3.6 million.”

“The Commissioner praised the officers for their honesty, dedication, and service, noting that their actions reflect the core values of the Nigeria Police Force and further strengthen public confidence in law enforcement,” the statement added.
