Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court has sentenced a man, Nnanna Daniel, to 14 years in prison for attempting to sexually assault a 13-year-old girl. The court also ordered that Daniel’s name be entered into the Lagos State Sexual Offenders Register.
The judge delivered the sentence on April 15, 2025, after Daniel pleaded guilty to an amended one-count charge of attempting to commit sexual assault by penetration. This plea came as part of a plea bargain agreement negotiated between the defence and prosecution.
Daniel, who was initially arraigned on July 27, 2021, for the offence of defilement, had pleaded not guilty at the time. However, during the most recent proceedings, the prosecuting counsel, I.D. Solarin, informed the court that Daniel, through his legal representative, S.N. Nwogu, had opted for a plea and sentence agreement. This necessitated amending the original charge. Upon reading the amended charge, Daniel admitted guilt.
In his judgment, Justice Oshodi emphasised the severity of crimes against minors.
“Sexual offences against children represent a grave violation of trust and cause profound harm to victims, their families, and the wider community,” he said. “The prosecutrix in this case was a child of merely 13 years at the time of this incident – a young person entitled to protection, not exploitation.”
Justice Oshodi sentenced Daniel to 14 years imprisonment, with the sentence to run from the date of his remand on May 18, 2018. He also imposed additional conditions as outlined in the plea bargain. These include a commitment from Daniel’s family to ensure his rehabilitation after release, and a restriction preventing him from contacting the victim or her family.
The court found Daniel guilty under Sections 33 and 38 of the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency Law of Lagos State, 2021.
