The Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, popularly known as “Ijaya” in political circles, has died. According to a statement by House Spokesperson Hon. Akin Rotimi, Jr., she passed away on January 15, 2025, after a brief illness.
The House of Representatives National Assembly also confirmed the news.
“It is with profound sorrow that the House of Representatives announces the passing of Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, who, until her demise, served as the Deputy Chief Whip of the House.” Hon. Akin Rotimi announced.
Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga, who represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, was a dedicated public servant, visionary leader and passionate advocate for her constituency. She was first elected to the House in 2019 under the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform. She also served as Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development during the 9th Assembly, where she championed policies to empower women and advance social welfare.
Re-elected in 2023, Hon. Adewunmi was appointed Deputy Chief Whip of the 10th Assembly, a role she held with distinction. She was widely admired for her exceptional leadership, commitment to legislative discipline, and passion for public service.
The House extended its heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, associates, and the government and people of Ogun State, particularly her constituents in the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North constituency.
