WTO Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has reacted with shock and sadness to the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, expressing her condolences on social media shortly after sending him get-well wishes.
The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has expressed sorrow over the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on July 13, 2025.
In a tweet, Dr Okonjo-Iweala stated she was unaware that the president was ill and had wished him good health earlier.
She expressed her condolences to Buhari’s family, close aides, and associates.
“I have just learned that he passed away. I am so very sad. May the Soul of HE @MBuhari rest in perfect peace,” she said.
The former President’s death was officially announced by his aide, Garba Shehu, on July 13, 2025, using the Muhammadu Buhari Official X account.
According to Garba Shehu, former President Muhammadu Buhari passed away on the 13th of July 2025 at a clinic in London. The announcement included prayers for his soul, asking that Allah grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.
The news has sparked mixed reactions across the country and beyond, with tributes pouring in from political leaders. Many citizens have taken to social media to express happiness over his passing.
Reacting to a video showing people rejoicing, @UnkleAyo, an X user, remarked that while Buhari may be said to be resting in peace online, the real celebration is happening in the North. He noted that no celebratory videos had surfaced from the South, East, or West yet and expressed curiosity about how Arewa Twitter would respond. “You cannot gaslight people into mourning,” he added.
Meanwhile, Activist Rinu Oduala reflected on the pain and devastation experienced by many during Buhari’s presidency.
She cited events such as the Lekki Toll Gate shooting, the Zaria massacre of Shia Muslims, rising poverty, rampant corruption, school abductions, and the suppression of dissent. She argued that his legacy was one of terror and loss.
“For all the lives lost and dreams buried during your eight years in power,” she concluded, “you won’t rest well.”
Muhammadu Buhari was a Nigerian military general and politician who served as president from 2015 to 2023.
A former military head of state from 1983 to 1985 following a coup, Buhari returned to power through democratic elections three decades later, becoming the first opposition candidate in Nigeria’s history to defeat a sitting president.
His presidency was marked by promises to fight corruption, improve security, and revive the economy, but it was also marred by widespread criticism over human rights abuses, economic hardship, and a failure to curb insecurity across the country.
