Nigeria’s D’Tigress secured their fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title with a decisive 78-64 victory over Mali in the 2025 final held in Abidjan.
The win marks their seventh overall AfroBasket trophy, having previously won in 2003, 2005, 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2023. With this latest triumph, the team became the first country on the continent to win the championship five times in a row, an impressive run that extends their unbeaten streak in the tournament to 29 games since 2015.
D’Tigress fought to the final with remarkable resilience, including a dramatic semifinal victory against Senegal. Trailing 8 points at the start of the fourth quarter, the team mounted a stunning comeback to win by 7 points, showcasing their championship spirit and unyielding drive.
D’Tigress Captain Amy Okonkwo has been named the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket MVP. She has won two back-to-back Women’s AfroBasket MVP honours.
Head Coach Rena Wakama, who made history in 2023 as the first woman to lead the team to an AfroBasket title, added another milestone to her legacy with this latest win.
Reacting to the team’s success, the Nigerian Presidency released a statement praising the players and coaching crew:
