According to the video, the women were seen holding leaves, chanting a local song “Onye Ohi tu,” loosely meaning “vaginal thief” while they escort the suspect out of the community. This action reflects a customary form of communal punishment often used by women’s groups to publicly shame and expel individuals accused of serious misconduct.
Rape is a prevalent issue in Nigeria, yet, it is highly under-reported due to stigma, victim-blaming, and a lack of confidence in the justice system. Between August 2024 and July 2025, the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) recorded a total of 8,692 cases of sexual and domestic violence. This included 99 cases of rape, 243 cases of defilement, and 48 cases of sexual harassment.
