The Nigerian Law School has confirmed the death of 23-year-old student Faith Ajoke Alayande, who died in the early hours of Friday, August 7, 2026, at the institution’s Lagos Campus hostel on Victoria Island, where she had been temporarily accommodated during an externship programme.
The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death is ongoing.
Faith Ajoke was a student of the Nigerian Law School’s Enugu Campus, temporarily accommodated at the Lagos Campus hostel for the duration of her externship programme.
At approximately 4:30 a.m. on August 7, her roommate, Ojo Abisoye Tinuola, who had recently completed her internship, alerted the Chief Matron of the Law School, Mrs Igbokwe Juliana, after becoming concerned about her.
The matron proceeded to the scene, where she found Alayande unresponsive within the hostel premises. She subsequently reported the incident to the Victoria Island Police Division at about 6:30 a.m., and detectives visited the scene, documented it, and took photographs to support the ongoing inquiry.
The Nigerian Law School confirmed the incident in a statement signed by its Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, Aderonke O. Osho.
“Preliminary information indicates that, at about 4:00 am on Friday, 7 August 2026, the student fell from the rooftop of the hostel at the campus and, sadly, succumbed to the incident.”
The institution stated that it was working closely with the appropriate authorities and Alayande’s family to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that all necessary procedures are duly followed. It extended its condolences to her family, colleagues, and all those affected by her death.
Uchenna Marvin, who stated that he supervised Faith Ajoke during her university years, described her death as heartbreaking. He recalled that she had previously discussed the right to life while working on her research in Medical Law, describing her as a thoughtful and intellectually curious student.
