The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Musbawu Amodu, in connection with the alleged killing of his 20-year-old wife in Agyaragu, Obi Local Government Area of the state.
According to the police, the incident occurred on Sunday in the Angwan Yahaya community after a domestic altercation between the couple turned violent. Officers who responded to the report found the woman unconscious with multiple injuries and took her to the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Lafia, where she was confirmed dead by medical personnel.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, said preliminary findings indicated that the altercation followed a disagreement over a meal. However, the disagreement forms part of the circumstances under investigation and does not diminish the seriousness of the alleged killing.
Nansel said the suspect was arrested shortly after the incident and has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Lafia for further investigation.
“The Commissioner of Police has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the case to ensure justice is served,” Nansel said.
According to the police, the couple had been married for six years and have two children.
The Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, condemned the incident and directed a thorough investigation.
The case has renewed attention to the continuing pattern of women allegedly killed by intimate partners in Nigeria. While investigations are ongoing, the incident is being treated as a suspected case of femicide.
Nigeria’s Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act provides a legal framework for addressing various forms of gender based violence, including physical abuse. In recent months, conversations around strengthening protections for women have also included calls for clearer legal recognition and accountability in cases of femicide.
The latest incident comes amid ongoing discussions on improving prevention, early intervention in domestic violence cases, and protection for women at risk. Investigations into the case are ongoing.
