The Federal Government has commissioned a newly built centralised passport personalisation centre at the NIS headquarters in Abuja to eliminate the delays that have long plagued passport acquisition process.
In a bid to eliminate delays that plague the passport acquisition process, the Federal Government has commissioned a newly built centralised passport personalisation centre at the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) headquarters in Abuja. This move marked a milestone in the agency’s 62 years of decentralised operations.
During an inspection of the facility at the NIS headquarters on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2025, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubumi Tuni-Ojo, explained that the centralised centre will significantly improve the time of passport production process and reduce the long delays of applicants. Previously, the NIS produced an average of 250 to 300 passports daily. However, with the capacity of the new centralised passport personalisation, NIS will now produce 4,500 to 5000 passports in five working hours.
The facility is said to be equipped with cutting-edge technology designed to put an end to production of passports across multiple centres and centralise in one location. It will significantly boost passport production capacity and streamline the process for Nigerians seeking passports by reducing their waiting time.
Over the years, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) consistently faced technological glitches, epileptic power supply, information inconsistencies, long delays, and past backlog. All these problems frustrate applicants leading to long delays in passport production.
However, with the new centralised passport production facility, Dr. Olubumi assured Nigerians of a better outcome that will produce over 1, 0000 passports in one hour.
