Summary

The federal government has mandated all graduates of Nigerian learning institutions to submit their thesis or final year projects into the NERD digitalisation programme. This is a necessary requirement for NYSC mobilisation or exemption.

The Federal Government has mandated all graduates to submit their thesis or final year project as a necessary requirement for the mobilisation of National Youth Service Corps or exemption from it. This directive is effective from October 6, 2025.

To link the NYSC mobilisation process to the national policy for the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD), all graduates will now submit their academic output, including thesis and final year project report to the NERD digitalisation programme. This new directive is binding on all graduates of the Nigerian Universities, Polytechnic, College of Education, and foreign institutions.

According to the circular issued by the Secretary to the Federal Government, Senator George Akume, the requirement will serve as an independent quality assurance measure and proof of academic enrolment. The submission will include the student’s full name, supervisor, co-supervisor (where applicable), head of department, name of department and the institution.

“The NYSC will now serve as a quality assurance check to enhance national productivity with a legal mandate to ensure all graduates are contributors to the national pool of knowledge,” the circular reads.

The Federal government explained that the policy is a response to Nigeria’s intellectual waste, curb certificate racketeering, and strengthen the credibility of higher education qualification.

However, this policy does not include serving corpers or those already enrolled in the scheme.
