Flamingos Emerges Victorious as WAFU-U17  Title

Nigeria’s under-17 national women’s team, Flamingos, has emerged victorious at the West Africa Football Union, (WAFU-U17) Girls’ Cup after thrashing Togo 4-0 on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.

Flamingos is a women youth football team operating under the leadership of Nigeria Football Federation. The team trains young talented sport women in preparation for the senior Nigeria women’s national football team. The team normally competes in the biennial FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup and African U-17 Women’s World Cup qualification, which are the top competitions for their age group. The 2026 WAFU-B U17 Girls Cup is a regional youth tournament hosted in the capital of Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire. The competition began in September 2026 and concluded on Sunday, September 27, 2026. 

Led by Hakeem Busari as the team’s coach, the champions have won  five matches, including victories against Ghana and hosts Côte d’Ivoire. They accumulated a maximum of 15 points, scoring 17 goals while conceding only twice throughout the competition.

“We are so proud of what we have achieved. It is not easy to win all five matches. Our main achievement is beating Ghana and the hosts Côte d’Ivoire,” Captain Chidi Harmony expressed her joy after the victory on Sunday.
