Nollywood entertainers have taken to social media to mourn the death of their colleague actor Alexx Ekubo, who passed away on Monday, May 11, 2026, at the age of 40, following a prolonged battle with stage 4 liver cancer.

Actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele, who confirmed his death via her Instagram Story, stated that she had attempted to see Alex Ekubo one final time before his passing.

“I really tried to reach out to see you one more time, but I guess you knew best. May your kind soul rest in peace, Alex. Ore mi, as you fondly called me, I will always remember and cherish the good times we shared together. Rest in peace, Alex,” she stated.

Singer and dancer Korra Obidi mourned his passing in an emotional livestream, describing him as exceptionally talented and hardworking.

“He did everything right. He had the websites. He had the movies. He had the awards,” she stated.

Obidi also used the moment to urge women to prioritise their health.

“If you’re a woman here, please get your breasts checked all the time. Please just try and live a healthy life,” she stated, referencing her own loss of her mother to cancer.

Actress and filmmaker Omoni Oboli, who described Ekubo as her “bestie,” wrote on Instagram, “I’m so upset! Who will help me fight death? This is too much! How are we supposed to move on? How do we say goodbye? I’m devastated. My bestie! Why? We had a plan! Where do I start from?”

Media entrepreneur and EbonyLife Group CEO Mo Abudu reflected on their last interaction, expressing regret that she never followed up after he stopped replying to her messages.

“I never imagined there wouldn’t be another chance. Dear Alex, you will be so deeply missed. You were such a beautiful human being, loving, real, kind, and always so respectful every single time we worked together,” she stated.

Actress Kate Henshaw similarly recalled how Alex Ekubo had shown up for her during her mother’s passing, lamenting that she would not have the opportunity to repay his kindness. Actress Yvonne Jegede stated, “I checked on him, and he kept saying he was fine. It’s so sad. Are you telling me I will never see Ikuku again? This is unimaginable. My spirit is broken.”

Alexx Ekubo is known for his roles in Weekend Getaway, The Bling Lagosians, and A Sunday Affair, and was one of Nollywood’s popular actors. He was named one of the Most Influential People of African Descent under 40 by the United Nations in 2020 for his contributions to entertainment.
