Lawmakers, gender advocates, and civil society groups gathered at the National Assembly for the She Represents Town Hall Meeting on July 23, 2025. The event focused on the Reserved Seats for Women Bill, a legislative proposal aimed at increasing women’s representation in Nigeria’s governance.
The Reserved Seats for Women Bill seeks to amend Nigeria’s constitution by creating 74 additional seats in the National Assembly and 108 in State Houses of Assembly, all exclusively for women.
At the convergence, the Honourable Minister for Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim issued a strong call for urgent action and renewed commitment to institutional gender equity.
“The time for inclusion is now. This isn’t charity — its equity. From markets to ministries, Nigerian women are already leading. Let the system catch up,” she said.
Also, the Hon. Kafilat Ogbara, Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Affairs emphasised the necessity of politics within the legislature to advance the bill.
The bill is currently slated for its third reading in October. If passed, it will move on to State Assemblies and then to the President’s desk before the year ends.
