Summary

Akua Donkor, Founder and Leader of the Ghana Freedom Party and a presidential candidate, has died at 72.

Akua Donkor, the Ghana Freedom Party Founder, Leader and Presidential candidate, has been pronounced dead on Oct. 28, 2024, barely a month before Ghana’s presidential election.

In a phone interview with Ghana Web, her eldest son Akwasi Baffour disclosed that she died at Ridge Hospital in Ghana after she was hurriedly rushed there and that they were still unsure of what happened to her as she had been perfectly fine prior to the day of her death.

Akua, who founded the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) in 2012,  was one of the thirteen people cleared to contest for the Presidential election on December 7, 2024, after about three trials of her trying to contest for President.

Following her death, her running mate Kwabena Agyeman Appiah Kubi, popularly known as Roman Fada, is expected to replace her in the race. In an interview with Angel FM on Oct. 29, 2024, Roman Fada expressed his readiness to replace the late leader if the law requires it. “If the law says I should be the flagbearer, why not? I am ready to take up the mantle,” he said.

Ghanaians have taken to social media to eulogise the death of the late politician.

“If I have learnt anything from Akua Donkor, it’s to persevere and never give up! She knew what she wanted and went for it regardless! A Queen I Stan,” @akosua_amoabea tweeted.

“Akua Donkor was one of the greatest mentors for women out there. Has 0 educational background but was able to make consistent appearances in the Ghanaian political space,” another user @_nanaopare tweeted
