On June 1, 2025, Girls With Period hosted a lively Games for Charity fundraiser in Lagos to promote menstrual health advocacy and raise ₦5,000,000 for sanitary kits.
On June 1, 2025, the Girls With Period initiative (GWP) hosted a Games for Charity fundraising event commemorating World Menstrual Hygiene Day. The event, which was held at Zen Archery, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, brought together participants for an evening of fun, networking and donations for menstrual products.
Girls With Period is an initiative committed to educating underprivileged women and girls on menstrual hygiene, sex education, family planning, and the importance of education. The organisation believes every girl deserves access to safe, affordable, sustainable menstrual products and accurate health information.
Zainab Olaniyan, Project Manager and Social Media Manager for GWP, highlighted the urgent need for support, noting that “over 100 million girls do not have access to menstrual products.” She explained that GWP’s mission is to provide sanitary pads and menstrual kits to girls in rural areas, schools, and underserved communities.
Naija Feminists Media, a media partner of the initiative, was represented at the event by its Partnerships and Projects Officer, Nkechi Igwebuike, as part of its ongoing efforts to amplify the organisation’s mission. At the event, Nkechi noted that the partnership reflects NFM’s commitment to menstrual health advocacy.
“On a broader scale, this is one of the ways we can go about normalising menstruation in our society,” she said. Adding to the statement, Zainab expressed her excitement about the partnership and urged everyone to support the cause and donate to the charity.
“I am very happy we are partnering with NFM for this event. It’s a great thing to collaborate to amplify our voice, this event is about supporting girls with periods and donating pads to the less privileged,” she said.
The fundraiser featured engaging activities such as archery, a scavenger hunt, capture the flag, mission impossible and several other interactive games. The event was designed to combine fun, networking, and philanthropy as the participants purchased tickets to access various games, and all proceeds are going toward the charitable cause.
A highlight of the event was a balloon-popping fundraising game, where attendees popped balloons containing different amounts and donated the revealed amounts. The total fundraising goal was ₦5,000,000, with 100% of the proceeds dedicated to providing sanitary kits for at least 1,000 girls in rural communities.
One of the participants, Catherine, shared her thoughts on the cause, saying,
“I believe the world will be better if we all show love,” Catherine said. “Women didn’t choose to have menstrual periods, so if there’s any way we can support them by giving them what they need, we should. It’s not easy, sanitary towels and pads are now so expensive. If there’s anything I can do to support this cause, then I’m all for it.”
The Games for Charity event seamlessly combined fun with impact, fostering a lively spirit of giving and solidarity while spotlighting Nigeria’s urgent need for menstrual equity.
