March 8 marks International Women’s Day, a day that pushes people to reflect on progress and the barriers that still shape women’s lives. This year’s theme, Give to Gain, places responsibility at the centre of that conversation. It asks a simple question about what society is willing to invest in women’s progress.
The idea behind the theme is direct. Women cannot gain opportunities without access to resources. Progress follows investment, not slogans.
Across many communities, girls still leave school when families cannot cover the cost of education. Women continue to build organisations that provide support, advocacy, and training despite limited funding. These groups fill gaps that institutions often leave unattended.
They run programmes that support survivors of violence. They organise workshops that equip young women with the skills and confidence they need. They advocate for policies that expand opportunities for women and girls. Yet the work rarely receives the level of investment it deserves. International Women’s Day generates attention every year, but attention alone does not sustain programmes. Resources do.
That is where the theme becomes important. Give to Gain reframes support for women as participation in social progress. When people invest in women, communities benefit from stronger education, stronger economies, and stronger leadership.
A scholarship keeps a girl in school long enough to complete her education. Support for a women-led organisation expands programmes that protect and empower women. Investment in advocacy strengthens the push for policies that address inequality.
International Women’s Day should therefore push the conversation beyond celebration. It should encourage people to think about the role they play in sustaining the work that advances women’s rights. Real progress grows when people move from recognition to contribution.
Supporting women and women-led organisations is one way to make that commitment tangible. Organisations like Naija Feminists Media and many others continue to build programmes that expand opportunities for women and girls. Our work shows what happens when people choose to invest in women’s progress rather than simply talk about it.
If the goal of International Women’s Day is a more equal society, then the theme offers a clear direction. Give so that women can gain access to education, opportunity, and leadership. Give because progress for women strengthens society as a whole.
