Government Should Cancel Surrogacy Now! — Digital Expert Roberta Edu

The government at all levels should stop sleeping on its responsibilities and enact laws regulating surrogacy now! Or even cancel it altogether. We do not have a system to run such here.

The exploitation of Nigerian girls is getting out of hand. The lack of adequate laws to protect these young girls is one reason why some couples living in countries such as Canada, the United States, and others, where surrogacy is already regulated, choose to come to Nigeria to take advantage of poverty and put the lives of vulnerable young girls at risk.

Pregnancy is not a joke. Even for mature adults with financial stability, personal freedom, and supportive spouses, pregnancy can be a challenging and life-altering experience. We know firsthand what women go through during pregnancy.

Every pregnancy takes something from a woman. For some, it is physical; for others, it affects them in ways they cannot even fully explain. No young girl should have to go through this simply for money, especially considering the risks and uncertainties involved.

People are literally paying these young girls to put their lives on the line. Your inability to have biological children should not come at the expense of another person’s health, well-being, or life.

If you cannot have children biologically, adoption is also an option. Many children in orphanages need loving homes and families. Yes, it is insensitive, but I prefer for girls not to die untimely instead. We pray for every family wanting a child to have the miracle of it but…

It is sickening, cruel, and deeply troubling to continue exploiting vulnerable young girls in this way. Some of them are even being pressured into carrying multiple pregnancies or undergoing Caesarean sections they never agreed to or fully understood. Is that fair?

Even if the government is failing in its duty to regulate the practice, why should vulnerable people be exploited because of it? If surrogacy is truly that easy, why can’t your family carry it for you?

The reports of young women dying from pregnancies they had no business carrying are heartbreaking. Why must your desire to have a child come at the cost of another person’s life?

It is time for the government to establish clear regulations, protect vulnerable women, ensure informed consent, provide proper medical oversight, and hold exploitative agencies and individuals accountable.
