Summary

HerBeacon Initiatives (HBI) marked the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child with an empowering outreach at Salawu Abiola Comprehensive High School, Abeokuta. The event inspired over 150 girls through interactive sessions, discussions, and gifts to embrace their identity, leadership, and power to create change.

In commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child 2025, HerBeacon Initiatives (HBI) visited Salawu Abiola Comprehensive High School, Osiele, Abeokuta, to celebrate and empower young girls. The outreach featured interactive sessions and impactful discussions centred on this year’s theme: “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead — Girls on the Frontline of Crisis.”

The event brought together students, volunteers, and facilitators in a safe and inspiring space dedicated to amplifying the voices of girls and reminding them of their power, leadership potential, and ability to create change within their communities.

The outreach featured three major speakers, each addressing key aspects of the theme: Identity (The Girl I Am), Leadership and Responsibility (The Change I Lead), and Courage and Advocacy (Girls on the Frontline of Crisis).

Through these engaging sessions, the girls were encouraged to recognise their unique identities, believe in their voices, and take active roles in promoting positive change around them.

The team also led interactive activities that helped the girls reflect on what they had learned and identify ways they could apply the lessons in their daily lives. Discussions included simple yet powerful examples of being on the frontline of change, such as standing up against bullying, discouraging gossip, properly disposing of waste for climate change, and supporting peers facing challenges.

To make the experience more memorable, HerBeacon Initiatives distributed sanitary pads, notebooks, pens, scrunchies, and other gift items to over 150 girls. These thoughtful gestures reinforced the organisation’s ongoing commitment to promoting menstrual hygiene, education, and self-worth among young girls.

After the main sessions, volunteers interacted personally with some of the students to understand their key takeaways. The responses revealed that the girls not only grasped the message but were also inspired to act differently — to lead with empathy, confidence, and responsibility.

The outreach recorded a meaningful turnout and engagement level, leaving a lasting impact on both the students and volunteers. It served as a reminder that small actions, when done consistently, can create ripple effects of change in society.

Every girl was reminded that she has a voice, she has power, and she has the capacity to lead change.

HerBeacon Initiatives remains committed to empowering more girls to stand at the forefront of transformation, one school and one conversation at a time.
