As part of the United Nations’ 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the Intervention Council for Women in Africa (ICWAfrica) has unveiled the “16 Days in Schools UNiTE To End Violence against Women and Girls” initiative. This programme aims to empower schools, protect girls and women, and foster awareness against gender-based violence.
The activities will run from December 2 to 6, 2024, at various schools in Abuja, including Kingdom Laureate School, Accolades School, Progress Dynamics International School, Elmot International School, and CedarHall International. Students will be engaged between 8 a.m. and 12 noon at different times of the day.
Speaking to Naija Feminists media about the initiative, George-Okoli Francisco Chidi, Director of Programs at West African Action Network on Small Arms (WAANSA) Nigeria, said,
“Ending violence against women and girls begins with education. Through initiatives like ‘16 Days in Schools UNiTE,’ we empower the next generation to challenge harmful norms, raise awareness, and take action to create a world where women and girls are respected, valued, and safe.”
WAANSA Nigeria, the Guiding Light Foundation, UN Women, the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, and the Federal Ministry of Education support the initiative.
The collaborative effort shows the importance of education and collective action in addressing and eliminating gender-based violence.
