The Katsina State Ministry of Women Affairs, in collaboration with the Hisbah Board, is investigating the reported brutal assault of Hauwa’u Lawal Sulaiman by Hisbah operatives, condemning the act as gender-based violence and pledging support and justice for the survivor.
The Katsina State Ministry of Women Affairs, in collaboration with the Commandant of the Hisbah Board, has launched an investigation into the reported brutal assault of a young woman, Hauwa’u Lawal Sulaiman. The assault was reportedly affiliated with individuals at the Katsina Hisbah Board.
Hauwa’u said she was severely beaten at the headquarters of the religious police following an altercation with the officer-in-charge of operations, identified as Nafiu. The incident reportedly occurred on April 15, shortly after she closed her cold drinks stall at the Scorpion Arena Funfair in Katsina town. She stated that the assault left her with a broken leg and a ruptured eardrum.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hadiza Abubakar Yar’adua, described the assault as a clear case of gender-based violence (GBV) and condemned all forms of violence against women, particularly those committed under the pretense of moral or religious enforcement.
“No woman or any individual should be subject to such inhumane treatment ,” Yar’Adua said in a statement. “The Ministry will also provide legal, psychosocial, and medical support to the victim and any others impacted.”
She added that the Ministry is committed to a thorough investigation and will forward its findings to the appropriate authorities for further action.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of women and girls in the state and emphasised that gender-based violence has no place in society.
