Summary
23-year-old teacher John Osifo has been sentenced to life imprisonment by Justice Rahman Oshodi for raping his eight-year-old pupil.
A Lagos State teacher, John Osifo, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping an eight-year-old pupil under his care. The verdict was handed down by Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Monday, December 9, 2024. The court also ordered that John’s name be entered into the Lagos State Sexual Offenders Register.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Oshodi stated that the prosecution had proven the charge of rape beyond all reasonable doubt. The victim’s testimony was supported by corroborative evidence from her mother and a medical examination that confirmed the absence of her hymen.
“The convict breached the position of trust he occupied and exploited the vulnerability of the child under his care,” the judge declared.
John’s actions were found to contravene Section 137 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015, which prescribes life imprisonment for rape. Justice Oshodi emphasised the gravity of the offence, describing it as a gross violation of the trust and safety owed to children by those in caregiving positions.
