The DSVA's sensitisation programme in Ijora is a part of Lagos State's dedication to eradicating SGBV through education, parental guidance, and community partnerships. The agency continues to lead efforts to create a safer, more informed society by providing resources and confidential support services
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has intensified its campaign against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) by hosting a sensitisation programme in different communities in Lagos, the latest being the Ijora community of Apapa-Iganmu.
The campaign in the area was held on November 16, 2024, and is an initiative targeted at parents, youths, and children to enhance awareness, strengthen parental involvement, and promote community collaboration in the fight against SGBV.
During the outing, Mr Akinde Olatosin, the agency’s Community Engagement Officer, emphasised the pivotal role of parents in nurturing sexual discipline among children while addressing the attendees of the campaign. He called for open communication, trust-building, and positive role modelling, describing these as critical measures for preventing sexual misconduct.
Participants were also educated on recognising various forms of abuse, reporting mechanisms, and the risks associated with revenge porn and exposing children to nudity. A clinical psychologist, Mr Ayodeji Nathaniel, also highlighted the availability of professional support through the DSVA’s toll-free helpline (08000-333-333), reassuring attendees of confidential and accessible assistance.
The programme also received great commendation from Ms Lukman Barakat, founder of LAB Foundation, who applauded the DSVA’s proactive efforts. She expressed her organisation’s commitment to collaborating with the agency to combat SGBV and build a safer environment for vulnerable groups.
In addition to the interactive sessions, the DSVA distributed educational materials to empower participants with practical tools to identify and prevent SGBV within their families and the broader community.
