Summary
Lagos State Police have arrested a 23-year-old man for fatally assaulting his girlfriend in Isheri-Osun. Authorities launched an investigation after a neighbour reported the incident, and the victim was pronounced dead at a hospital. The suspect remains in custody as police continue their inquiries.
The Lagos State Police Command has detained a 23-year-old man for reportedly beating his girlfriend to death in the Ijedodo, Isheri-Osun area of Lagos state.
Confirming the incident on Monday, Feb. 24, 2025, the command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the crime occurred on Friday, Feb. 21, at about 8:00 p.m. A neighbour reported the case to the Isheri-Osun Police Divisional Station after witnessing the suspect assaulting the victim in his apartment.
“The neighbour said he saw the suspect beating his girlfriend for a reason yet to be determined,” CSP Hundeyin stated. “A few minutes later, the suspect screamed for help. When the neighbour arrived at the scene, he found the young woman unconscious on the bed with visible marks of violence on her body.”
Efforts to save the victim proved futile as doctors at a hospital in Ijegun confirmed her dead upon arrival. Following the report, detectives visited the crime scene and the hospital, where they inspected and photographed the corpse before transferring it to a morgue in Yaba for autopsy. CSP Hundeyin further confirmed that officers had detained the suspect for questioning while investigations continued.
Annually, men kill thousands of women they know. In 2023, approximately 51,100 women and girls were killed by their intimate partners or other family members. There is a serious need for the government, lawmakers and law enforcement agencies to take femicide seriously and put in greater measures to punish men who abuse and kill women.
