Summary
A chilling incident in South Africa saw Sibusiso Lawrence kill his girlfriend, post a confession video on Facebook, and later took his own life. According to police, the woman’s body was found on a gravel road in Malangeni, and the suspect was later discovered hanging from a tree nearby.
A chilling incident unfolded in Umzinto, KwaZulu-Natal, where a man killed his girlfriend and confessed to the crime in a video shared on Facebook. The man, identified as Sibusiso Lawrence, posted footage of his girlfriend’s wounded body of her laying down with her throat cut off online, sparking outrage and shock on social media.
The tragic events occurred on Tuesday, December 17, with the video gaining widespread attention today. In the clip, Sibusiso, visibly bloodstained, explained his actions in his native language. He expressed feelings of betrayal and frustration, citing his efforts to make his girlfriend happy and his grievances over their troubled relationship.
“She got tired of me and dumped me because she was going to get Road Accident Fund money, and I accepted that she dumped me. After that, we both had other partners, and she came back to me again and took a video of us and sent it to my girlfriend. My girlfriend has dumped me, and she also dumped me,” he stated.
Hours later, Sibusiso was found dead, having hanged himself in the Malangeni area, a short distance from where his girlfriend’s body was discovered.
KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that officers responded to a report of a woman’s body found on a gravel road in Malangeni. The 25-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A swift police search led to the discovery of the suspect’s body nearby.
This tragic case underscores the global crisis of femicide, the killing of women and girls, often perpetrated by intimate partners. Femicide remains a critical issue worldwide, with one in five women killed globally losing their lives at the hands of a partner or experiencing intimate partner violence. Alarmingly, South Africa’s femicide rate is five times higher than the global average, with an average of nine women murdered daily in 2022.
