The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Minister Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has condemned gender-based violence against girls and women in Nigeria.
Speaking at the Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Minister Imaan condemned male abuse of women and girls, both physically and sexually. She estimated that “31% of women aged 15-49 have experienced physical violence from men, while over 28% have suffered sexual violence at least once in their lifetime.”
“These are not mere statistics; they are daughters, sisters, mothers, and neighbours. Each number carries a human face and a human story. They remind us that gender-based violence is not a private problem but a community crisis that undermines peace, family life and development,” she stated.
Gender-based violence (GBV) is one of the most common and widespread human rights violations in Nigeria. It particularly affects women and girls, manifesting in rape, misogyny, sexual assault, domestic violence, forced marriage, female genital mutilation, and femicide. GBV remains a persistent issue in the country due to deep patriarchal norms, cultures, and the low rate of male perpetrators that were brought to justice.
The Minister of Women’s Affairs urged major stakeholders to take swift action to curb the menace.
