Summary
Princess Lalla Asmaa of Morocco arrived in Kenya on November 4, 2025, for a three-day working visit focused on supporting children with hearing loss. She and Kenya’s First Lady, Rachel Ruto, are leading a cochlear implant medical mission at Kenyatta National Hospital to help approximately 70 children.
The princess of the Kingdom of Morocco, Lalla Asmaa, arrived in Kenya on November 4, 2025, for a three-day working visit to support children with hearing impairments.
Princess Lalla Asmaa was received at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) by Kenya’s First Lady, Rachel Ruto, and senior government officials, including the Cabinet Secretary for Gender and Children Services, Hon. Anna Cheptumo.
The visit was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kenya and held at the invitation of the First Lady under her Voice of Children programme.
The Princess and First Lady Rachel will jointly preside over a cochlear-implant surgical exercise at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
The exercise is expected to benefit roughly 70 children with moderate-to-profound hearing loss, with a specialised KNH ENT surgical team leading the procedures.
As part of her foundation’s contribution, Princess Lalla Asmaa donated 58 cochlear implants and seven surgical kits to Kenya’s Ministry of Health to support the programme.
The donation will be used in the current clinical round and for follow-up rehabilitation services for recipients.
A cochlear implant is a small electronic medical device that bypasses damaged parts of the inner ear (cochlea) and directly stimulates the auditory nerve, enabling people with severe sensorineural hearing loss to perceive sound. The implant requires surgical insertion and lifelong audiological rehabilitation for optimal outcomes.
During her three-day stay, the Princess is scheduled to visit the KNH audiology and ENT units, observe implant surgeries, and sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that will strengthen Kenya–Morocco collaboration in paediatric hearing healthcare.
