AdvoKC Foundation, in partnership with Naija Feminists Media, will host an X Space discussion at 5 p.m. on September 26 on the theme “Gender Equality Commitments in Nigeria’s Legislative Agenda.”
The discussion forms part of the Legislative Agenda Meter, an accountability initiative under the Promise Tracker NG platform that monitors how the National Assembly delivers on its four-year legislative agenda.
The virtual dialogue will focus on Nigeria’s legislative commitments to advancing gender equality, with discussions on reforming the Police Act and Labour Act. Despite legislative promises, Nigeria’s Police Act (2022) still contains discriminatory provisions that restrict women’s enlistment, marriage rights, maternity protections, and employment security. Similarly, the Labour Act (2004) retains outdated clauses that limit women’s work opportunities. Promised reforms were delayed until 2027, and no progress has been made so far.
The upcoming X Space will convene experts to discuss these gaps, raise awareness, and demand legislative action. Speakers include lawyer Saratu Musa Wakawa, Lawyer Amy Onyinyechi Chinekwu Onwumere, National Assembly Coordinator of the gender technical unit Christiana Eguma and AdvokC communications assistant Ayomide Adekoya.
Join us on September 26 at 5 p.m. for a dialogue that connects reforms to the Legislative Agenda Meter and urges lawmakers to fulfil their promises to women in the affected areas.
