To mark the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, Naija Feminists Media will host a timely X Space titled “Together Against the Trafficking of Women,” focusing on the urgent issue of trafficking of women and young girls in Nigeria and globally.
The virtual conversation will occur on July 30, 2025, at 5:00 PM WAT, on X (formerly Twitter).
Trafficking of women and girls remains a gendered issue, with the purpose of sexual and economic exploitation. This includes forced prostitution, pornography, domestic servitude, commercial agricultural labour, arranged or forced marriages, and coerced involvement in conflict situations for sexual services, portage, or domestic roles.
According to global statistics, one in three human trafficking victims is a child. Girls are twice as likely to experience violence during the trafficking process, and the rise of digital platforms without sufficient safety protocols has heightened the risk of exploitation.
The X space conversation will examine the systemic nature of trafficking, shedding light on how harmful social, cultural, and economic structures enable the continued exploitation of women and girls. It will also highlight the various forms trafficking takes and how current systems fail to protect vulnerable populations adequately.
Naija Feminists Media will explore preventative measures and recommend institutional and community-based safety systems to reduce women’s and girls’ vulnerability. The discussion will include perspectives from women professionals, advocates, and experts at the intersection of media, healthcare, education, law, and social justice.
These include gender advocate and writer Sapphire Mclaniyi-Agbley, journalist Titilayo Ilebani, and journalist Miskilu Aminat Olaitan, whose work spans platforms like The Nation and Fact-Check Africa. Also joining are medical doctor and writer Dr. Amarachi J. Ike, student advocate Blessing Ahiaba, and lawyer and feminist Jenifatu Oshiozuwe Yakubu, known for her advocacy on gender rights and legal protections for women.
Through this conversation, Naija Feminists Media aims to raise awareness, foster accountability, and inspire collective action to identify, report, and prevent human trafficking in Nigeria and beyond, particularly as it affects women and girls.
Join the conversation on our X platform @naijaradfems and be part of it.
