Namibia has made history as the first country where Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Lucia Witbooi, and Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila hold the nation’s top three leadership positions — President, Vice President, and Speaker of the National Assembly.
Namibia has made history as the first country in the world where women simultaneously hold the nation’s top three leadership positions: President, Vice President, and Speaker of the National Assembly.
Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah became Namibia’s first female President on March 21, 2025, after she was sworn in.
Before becoming the president, she served as Vice President following the death of the former president, Nangolo Mbumba, and had previously held ministerial positions in international relations, environment, and information.
Supporting her administration is Vice President Lucia Witbooi, a former teacher and legislator who was appointed on March 22, 2025.
Lucia taught for nearly three decades before joining politics and was elected to the National Assembly in 2009. She served as Deputy Minister of Gender Equality and later as Deputy Minister of Home Affairs before rising to her current position.
Upon her appointment, Lucia urged unity and collaboration across the government, saying, “Let us work together, let us stand together, and let us support our President.”
Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila was elected as Speaker of the National Assembly on March 21, 2025, after a decade as Namibia’s first female Prime Minister.
As a trained economist, she has served in public office since 1995, including as Minister of Finance for twelve years. In her acceptance speech as Speaker, she expressed gratitude and called for national unity, saying, “We must prioritise the national interests above ours.”
