NFM has teamed up with Roundcheck to combat gender disinformation and to dismantle harmful narratives and stereotypes about women in the media.
Naija Feminist Media (NFM) has officially teamed up with Round Check to combat gender disinformation and misinformation in mainstream media.
This initiative seeks to address the growing issue of false or misleading narratives that specifically target individuals based on gender, particularly in ways that harm, mislead, or reinforce negative stereotypes about women.
Gender disinformation is a subset of misogynistic abuse and violence, usually by men against women. The phenomenon uses false or misleading gender and sex-based narratives, often with some degree of coordination, to deter women from participating in the public sphere. Within Nigerian media and politics, these targeted attacks commonly attempt to discredit or intimidate women, relying on false narratives, questioning marital status, or fabricating scandals. These tactics exploit societal biases, dissuading women from speaking up or engaging in public roles.
Together, NFM and Round Check are launching this partnership to ensure fair representation of women in Nigerian media, focusing on fact-checking and countering gendered misinformation.
NFM’s Partnerships and Projects Officer, Nkechi Igwebuike, shared the project’s importance: “Through this partnership, we will work to set these biases straight and continue to advocate for a better quality of life for women nationally and globally.”
Caleb Ijioma, Executive Director of Round Check, echoed his enthusiasm, stating,
“We are thrilled to move forward with this partnership with NFM, which will help amplify accurate information and counter misleading narratives about women,” he said. “Gender disinformation is a critical issue that disproportionately affects women. Given NFM’s impactful activities, this partnership is both timely and essential in achieving our goals.”
As Nigeria’s first radical feminist media platform, Naija Feminist Media is dedicated to uplifting women’s stories, perspectives, and feminist work while ensuring media representation that is free from bias. In alignment with these objectives, Round Check is an independent youth-led fact-checking platform dedicated to launching campaigns and projects to solve misinformation and disinformation within society, especially among young people.
This collaboration will ensure a positive shift in Nigerian media by promoting factual, inclusive narratives free from gender-based manipulation. It also aims to reshape the media landscape, emphasising accuracy, fairness, and inclusivity in portraying women and feminist issues.
