Summary
Naija Feminists Media has partnered with Twenty Pounds Entertainment on a new film titled Ashawo. The film aims to challenge the stigma placed on prostitutes and spark conversations about morality, religious hypocrisy and double standards.
Naija Feminists Media (NFM) has partnered with Twenty Pounds Entertainment for an upcoming film, “Ashawo.” The project seeks to challenge harmful social narratives about prostitution and highlight religious hypocrisy.
Acclaimed screenwriter and filmmaker Ogochukwu Umeadi leads the film’s production.
“Ashawo is a bold, dialogue-driven short film that interrogates the invisible boundaries between the sacred and the profane,” Umedi says. “It explores the lived consequences of religious hypocrisy, gender-based violence, and class prejudice, especially in contexts like Nigeria, where religious spaces often dictate social acceptance.”
The movie tells the story of a surprise meeting between a young religious man and a prostitute during a university church retreat. She is smart, bold, hurt, and fully human. Their conversation under a tree opens up deep questions about how society defines purity and morality and who deserves respect.
As part of its commitment to advance gender equality, NFM collaborates with Twenty Pounds on storytelling that centres the humanity of prostitutes and the visibility of marginalised women in the media.
