Aisha Yesufu released an open letter on Dec. 1, 2025, criticising the National Assembly for failing to protect Nigerians amid rising insecurity. She said lawmakers have abandoned their constitutional duty to hold the executive accountable and described the legislature as a rubber-stamp assembly.
Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has criticised the National Assembly for allegedly abandoning its constitutional duty to defend Nigerians amid worsening insecurity. She made the allegations in an open letter addressed to federal lawmakers on Dec. 1, 2025.
Aisha said the legislative arm has failed to speak for Nigerians at a time when citizens are facing increasing attacks across the country.
“Today, the Nigerian people are being hunted like animals, abducted or killed in their places of worship, schools, on the roads, farms, markets and even in their homes,” she wrote.
She accused lawmakers of defending the executive instead of holding it accountable, noting that every member of the National Assembly was elected to protect the people’s interests. According to her, the legislature has become a rubber-stamp assembly and has not taken meaningful action to address the country’s security challenges.
The human rights activist stated that the National Assembly has neglected its responsibility to enact laws that promote citizens’ welfare and security. She added that the legislature has failed to address issues of poverty, insecurity, and corruption, accusing members of being distracted by fancy dinners while citizens suffer.
She urged lawmakers to convene an emergency session on the security crisis, investigate the failures of security agencies and ensure accountability from the executive arm. She also insisted that President Bola Tinubu be summoned to address a joint sitting of the National Assembly on steps taken to protect Nigerians.
“We will not be silenced or intimidated. We will continue to demand accountability and good governance,” she said.
