Rukayat Motunrayo Shittu, a 29-year-old journalist and lawmaker representing Owode/Onire Constituency in the Kwara State House of Assembly, has won the APC re-election primary for the seat. She defeated her only challenger, Sulyman Ayegun, to secure the party’s ticket for the 2027 general elections.
She secured this victory on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at the APC re-election primary for the Owode/Onire State Constituency seat in the Kwara State House of Assembly. Rukayat has represented the Owode/Onire Constituency since June 2023.
During her first term, she sponsored the Kwara State Electric Power Sector Bill, which passed its first reading in the Kwara State House of Assembly in 2025, aimed at repealing outdated electricity laws from 1992 and 2006 and establishing a new legal framework for electricity generation and distribution in the state.
If she wins the general election, Rukayat would become the first lawmaker in the constituency’s history to serve a second consecutive term.
