LAGOS, NIGERIA —A man identified as Olakanla Timileyin Alani, known on X (formerly Twitter) as @Tiimbhoe, has been outed for sexually assaulting his friend while she was asleep. The incident reportedly occurred on Mar 31, 2025, and has drawn widespread outrage from women following its exposure on social media.

According to a thread posted by X user @yettybabyy_, a close friend of the victim, Timileyin, reportedly unbuttoned the victim’s shirt and touched her inappropriately while she slept. He later went further to remove her belt, unbutton her shorts, and unzip them. The lady reportedly awoke during the assault but remained frozen with fear. Realising he would not stop, she turned on her stomach and remained in that position until morning before leaving.

Screenshots shared in the post include messages where Timileyin admitted to the act after the survivor confronted him. He also wrote a handwritten apology, which he gave to the victim in an apparent attempt to make amends—a gesture that many online have criticised as inadequate and deeply insensitive given the gravity of the assault.

“Dear Lola, Reflecting on the insane act perpetrated by me. I feel so low of myself. No one deserves to be treated the way that I did. You have been a major support to me and everything that’s mine. I know how much damage I have done with my act of foolishness, stupidity and insanity. Lola, please, I regret every bit of this, I swear on my life. My act was stupid, inhumane and uncalled for especially. I am very much sorry,” the letter reads.

The case has sparked conversations across social media about consent, sexual violence, and the disturbing frequency of such incidents, especially those involving perpetrators known to the victims. Many users have called for accountability and urged that the matter not be dismissed or handled privately.

According to Women’s Aid, one in four women (27%) has experienced domestic abuse since the age of 16 (ONS, 2023a).  Recent data by UNICEF shows that more than 370 million girls and women alive today, equivalent to one in 8 women, have experienced male sexual violence before the age of 18. The World Health Organization (WHO) also estimates that about 1 in 3 (30%) of women worldwide have been subjected to either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime globally. Most of this violence is intimate partner violence.

As of the time of reporting, no public statement has been made by Timileyin, and it is unclear whether legal action has been initiated.
