Nigeria’s former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, has earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Psychology, Guidance, and Counselling from the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education in Rivers State.

The degree was conferred during the university’s 43rd Postgraduate Convocation Ceremony on May 31, 2025. The former First Lady used the occasion to advocate for lifelong learning, particularly among women and youth.

In a statement released by her media adviser, Chris Okeke, Dame Jonathan expressed gratitude to God for seeing her through the programme and described the achievement as a personal milestone. She dedicated her doctorate to Nigerian women, stating that it symbolises perseverance, resilience, and the pursuit of knowledge.

“I feel that no age is too late to achieve your academic dreams, whether you are young or old,” she said. “If I can do it, you can also do it. Even in retirement, you are not too old to go back to school.”

Ms. Patience Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s First Lady from 2008 to 2015, reaffirmed her commitment to advocating for the rights and development of women, children, and the youth. She pledged to promote dialogue and social upliftment through education and community engagement.

The former First Lady emphasised that quality education is the foundation of a better society, urging women and young people to invest in personal growth and strive for academic excellence to become their best versions.
