A Lagos-based man, Emeka Joseph, has been arrested and remanded in Kirikiri prison for the alleged domestic abuse and assault of Chisom Ezeka, his supposedly 18-year-old wife. His arrest was announced by the Lagos State Police Command on Thursday, June 25, 2026.

A viral video shared on Monday, June 22, 2026, showed Chisom with visible facial injuries, restricted in a closed embrace by Emeka as neighbours challenged him over the alleged abuse. They urged him to leave her alone as he continued to pull her towards him.

ā€œMadam, leave my wife. You want to drag my wife with me,ā€ Emeka said in the video.

Another person accused him of repeatedly abusing the young woman, saying, ā€œYou want to kill her. This girl is just 18 years old. This man is brainwashing her; he is beating her daily.ā€

Subsequently, another video surfaced online where the human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu was in a hospital with Chisom. According to the footage, Gwamnishu told the victim of plans to arrest her abuser; however, she pleaded against it.

According to the command’s statement, the victim, who is from Ebonyi State, was allegedly brought to Lagos by the suspect after he married her. Residents in the neighbourhood shared that he repeatedly assaulted her and dismissed their concerns when they confronted him about the domestic violence. The report also revealed that Emeka and Chisom were not legally married, and she has been rescued and is in protective custody.

ā€œThe suspect has since been charged to court and remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre, while the case has been adjourned till 3rd August, 2026,ā€ the police statement reads.
