During an appearance on Channels Television’s Health Matters, Professor Alero Roberts, an associate professor and honorary consultant at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, advised Nigerians to engage in yearly checkups as a birthday gift to themselves. She also shared several health tips, including avoiding refined sugar.

On Channels Television’s Health Matters, Associate Professor and honorary consultant to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Prof Alero Roberts, revealed on August 27, 2025, that Nigerians should stop consuming refined sugar as it is more addictive than cocaine. She advised that they should treat themselves to a yearly birthday gift instead.

Sharing several health tips, Prof Alero highlighted that natural sweet things like fruits and honey are beneficial, but adding refined sugar to everything, especially for children, is unhelpful.

“What many people don’t understand is that refined sugar is actually more addictive than cocaine. You just try stopping eating refined sugar, and in three days, your body will tell you that something has gone wrong,” she said.

The medical practitioner also advised that Nigerians avoid screens immediately upon waking and engage in activities like exercise or stretching for 30 minutes to an hour.

“It is good to get at least three hours of exercise per week, about 30 minutes daily. But even walking is better. If you do a sedentary job, you have to get up from your desk every hour. You should also add weights if you want to be healthy,” she said.

Professor Roberts discouraged using alcohol, substances, drugs, or even over-the-counter drugs as coping mechanisms, stating they are never ever a good idea. Instead, she recommended regular exercise and visiting medical professionals for health issues.
