Nigerian renowned author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has received another literary prize award at Gothenburg Book fair, in Sweden. The award named, Sjojungfrun (The Mermaid Award) recognises her as one of the most influential storytellers of our time.
The Sjojungfrun literary award was established in 2024 as part of the Book’s Fair 40th anniversary. It’s annually given to a fiction writer who has moved Swedish readers through her or her storytelling. Chimamanda is a familiar author to the Swedish, her book “We should All Be Feminists” was given to all 16-year-old high school students in Sweden, in 2025.
The jury praised her for reshaping conversations on feminism, identity, and postcolonialism through her storytelling. Hence, captivating readers globally.
In her acceptance speech, Chimamanda expressed her gratitude, saying she was moved by the rich literary symbolism of Mermaid as by the knowledge that her works have deeply touched the Swedish readers. She also described fiction writing as a vocation that is central to her life.
Since her debut novel “Purple Hibiscus” (2003), Chimamanda has received global recognition for her literary prowess and storytelling. Her recent book “Dream Count” is longlisted for the 2025 Women’s Prize for Fiction and was the featured title at the 2025 National Book Festival in the United States.
This award recognition comes days after Chimamanda won the Felix Jud augural prize in Hamburg. She is also set to receive the Sunday Times Award for Literary Excellence in London, in a few weeks.Â
