Summary

Sagiru Rijiyar-Zaki, a 22-year-old man, has been sentenced to death for stabbing his stepmother and strangling his sister to death.

A 22-year-old man identified as Sagiru Rijiyar-Zaki has been sentenced to death by hanging for killing his stepmother and sister. This court sentence came through on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at a Kano high court.

Following the undeniable evidence found against him, Sagiru was found guilty of using a screwdriver to stab his stepmother, Rabiatu, in her neck and a scarf to strangle his sister,  Manawara, to her death.

Sugari committed the crime at approximately 8 pm on January 7, 2023,  at Rijiyar Zaki Quarters, Kano state, after a domestic dispute that erupted between him and his family members. He was reported to have attacked Rabiatu with a screwdriver, stabbing her neck in the process and later used a scarf to strangle his sister.

With the presentation of two witnesses and exhibits, Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu, who presided over the case, pronounced the case proven without doubt and sentenced Sagiru Rijiyar-Zaki to death by hanging.

In her ruling, the judge said, “The evidence presented by the prosecution was credible and convincing. The court, therefore, finds the defendant guilty as charged and sentences him to death by hanging.”

This case highlights the growing concerns of femicide. A report by DOHS in 2025 revealed that there were 135 femicide incidents resulting in 149 deaths in 2024. As of the time of this report, there have been 17 incidents and 19 deaths. Most of these victims were killed by their intimate family members and partners.
