San Diego Wave FC has officially announced the signing of 19-year-old Nigerian striker and CAF Young Women’s Player of the Year finalist Chiamaka Okwuchukwu for a one-year contract that runs through 2025.
The forward joins the club via transfer from Nigeria’s first-division Women’s Premier League team, Rivers Angels FC, for an undisclosed fee. She will join the Wave’s 2025 roster pending a medical examination and receiving her International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P1 Visa.
San Diego Wave FC Sporting Director and General Manager Camille Ashton expressed her delight in welcoming Chiamaka to the Wave family, stating that her signing reflects the club’s commitment to adding promising young players to the roster.
“With her skillset, we believe Chiamaka will complement our current attacking players very well and be a key contributor to the team,” she added.
Chiamaka Okwuchukwu recently showcased her talent on the global stage during the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia. She played in all four matches for Nigeria, scoring two goals and providing one assist. The forward also represented Nigeria at the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica at just 16 years old, helping Nigeria advance to the quarterfinals with an undefeated group-stage performance.
Her stellar performances earned her a nomination for the Young Women’s Player of the Year at the 2024 CAF Awards. With her proven abilities and potential, Okwuchukwu’s addition marks another milestone in the club’s mission to strengthen its squad with young and talented players.
The Nigerian striker has travelled to San Diego, where she received a warm welcome and will occupy an international slot on San Diego Wave FC’s 2025 roster.
